There is still no word for that thing that gives an artist personality, the thing which makes him different that the others, beyond talent and technique. It is permanent, humane, never lacking, but impossible to define with a single word. Some call it 'genius', others assign it metaphysical qualities, but in the end, it remains something present and ethereal, beneficial in our attempt to feel and choose. Otherwise we cannot explain how an artist like Julian Lage is so clearly defined from an artistic point of view, although with every creation he appears changed, more mature and more complex. In 2016, with bass player Scott Colley and drummer Kenny Wollesen, assisted by his inventive friend and producer Jesse Harris, Julian Lage released the album Archlight, a history of the jazz specific to the house. With the same winning team which usually remains the same, 'Modern Lore' was recorded, an expedition of rock through the essence of jazz and sound by Telecaster, without entering a jazz-rock area. It is an instrumental album where harmony and spontaneity, the jazz chromatics are blended with the repetition cycle specific to rock, but without simplifying the expression or the musical message. Steely Dan used to do the same, but they would add equally sophisticated lyrics. Even though it is accessible from begging to the end, 'Modern Lore' abounds in nuances, exotic elements and artistic content coming from that quality we mentioned in the beginning. Otherwise, all that would be played would remain something between themselves, for themselves. The worth consists in their ability to make us fell joyful about what they do. Intelligent, intimate and solid, an ideal way to welcome the audience as it deserves.
