Opening Night at the Opera and Ballet Experimental Studio in Bucharest

Monday, 3 December 2012 , ora 9.15

On 28th November, the opening night of the "Ludovic Spiess" Opera and Ballet Experimental Studio took place in the lobby of the Bucharest National Opera. The performance was based on Gian Carlo Menotti's comic opera Amelia Goes to the Ball. Although the young performers were an obvious presence in the show, a nice surprise was the debut of the director Irina Macovei and scenographist Maria Tache. The leading roles went to the soprano Ioana Mitu, who had a good performance along with a generous role, and the baritone Vasile Chișiu, whose rendering was accurate. Even though the clear voice of the tenor Andrei Lazăr delighted everyone, we truly hope to see him pointing up his interpretative vocal skill. The mezzo- soprano Sorana Negrea was part of the show as well. In other roles, there were a few students from the University of Music. The pianist Lidia Butnariu was present, too. Overall, it was a well-rounded, alert and pleasant show; yet, the audience did not appear at a loss for words. It is indeed a positive attempt to include in the repertoire a Menotti's work, even if the show is held in the lobby. However, I doubt that this choice is illustrative for the repertoire of the Bucharest National Opera.
