France has been shaping its generations of jazz musicians since the arrival of Sidney Bechet and the taking-over of swing has begun as a component of its own musical culture. The violin is probably the most clearly represented by three generations illustriously signed by Stephane Grappelli, Jean-Luc Ponty and Didier Lockwood, the latter being the most stylistically diverse, even though, after hearing Ponty, it is very difficult to say something new about the broad expression of jazz violin.
