I bring to your attention an album which was released on 3rd February, 2014 and which can be listened to on Radio Romania Music on the very same day. It’s an album signed by the violinist Julia Fischer and the pianist Milana Chernyavska, with works by Pablo de Sarasate. It is included within the Radio Romania Music campaign ‘Vote for the Best Classical Album of 2014’, taking place on www.romaniamuzical.ro. The album comprises, among others, eight of the Spanish Dances composed by Pablo de Sarasate and the famous Gypsy Airs.

Why Pablo de Sarasate?

10th March will mark the anniversary of 170 years since the birth of the well-known violinist and composer. This is reason enough, but it’s not the only one: the music created by Sarasate shines not only because of the virtuosity requested to the interpreter, but also due to its Spanish sound, so appreciated by the audience, in general.

Julia Fischer – a violinist with…poetic talent

Within the programme ‘Music Box’ on Radio Romania Music, we have listened before to fragments from the albums of the German violinist Julia Fischer, who will turn 31 in 2014. That is because at this age, which can be considered young for an international artist, Julia Fischer already has other five titles released by Decca: among them, Paganini’s Caprices or concertos by Bach. In 2007 Julia Fischer was awarded the title of ‘The Artist of the Year’ by the prestigious magazine ‘Gramophone’ and in 2009 she received ‘The Instrumentalist of the Year’ Award at the MIDEM Classical Awards Gala, both confirmations of an extraordinary status. Because Julia Fischer is an extraordinary artist: this is proved by her recordings, which are exceptional due to the technical virtuosity, but especially because of their sensitivity and intelligence.

Milana Chernyavska, a less well-known name

If Julia Fischer’s name is not new on Radio Romania Music, Milana Chernyavska is almost unknown. The pianist was born in the Ukraine, but then moved to Germany. She graduated from the Tchaikovsky Conservatoire in Moscow in 1990 and she obtained several prizes in important international competitions: for example, the Gold Medal in the Horowitz Competition, won in 1994. Besides her busy career as a soloist, especially in Germany, Milana Chernyavska is the favourite stage partner of some important artists: Lisa Batiashvili, Alfred Brendel, Daniel Müller-Schott or Jan Vogler.

And a personal opinion

I believe that an album like this was necessary in order to remind us of Pablo de Sarasate, the virtuoso violinist who also left us a repertory of original works, bearing his unique mark.

I can’t imagine how Pablo de Sarasate played his own works. But I don’t think that his interpretation was very different from the one you listened to this evening: technical perfection and real feeling. I recommend the album on these winter days, when we long for some holidays in the sunny Spain. The album will also be available in Romania, in specialized stores.

The Sarasate album of the violinist Julia Fischer can be listened to on Radio Romania Music on Monday, 3rd February, at 19:00 and again, on Sunday, 9th February, at 13:20.
