Welcome, ladies and gentlemen. I am Liliana Staicu and starting today, every Sunday morning from now on, we will explore together the artistic qualities of some of the most famous artists of the moment; from the young performers who are now beginning to get a reputation, to the already well-known names of the genre, each of them will be a part of the the Nonconformist Portrait show that lasts for a half an hour, here, on Radio Romania Music.
The first nomination...
This season opens with a soprano who first studied musicology at the Paris Conservatory, who afterwards took canto classes, as well . She was discovered by the conductor William Christie, the one who lead her to the pre-classical repertory, becoming one of the soloists with whom he collaborated constantly in the concerts and recordings made along with Les Arts Florissants chorus. In the exact same company, the artist whom I dedicate this nonconformist portrait to, was up on prestigious stages, such as, La Scala in Milan, the Colón Theatre in Buenos Aires, Wigmore Hall in London or on the one of the Aix-en-Provence Festival.
Her name is Patricia Petibon and I am presenting her to you today with the help of her new album, La Belle Excentrique, released only a week ago, on 29th September.
Although her repertory is predominantly pre-classical, she has chosen to explore in her new album, a territory that is as close as the other - the one of the French chansons, of the vocal music that bears the imprint of some of the most famous French composers, such as Francis Poulenc, Erik Satie, Leo Ferré, Reynaldo Hahn sau Gabriel Fauré.
La Belle Excentrique album...
... it is, as the title says, somehow eccentrical, by way of combining the sequence of the vocal performances with some instrumental ones, by the alternation of the cabaret performances with the ones full of sensibility and elegance. It is, for sure, a prententious record, not easy to listen to or to understand, with a music which is not enjoyed by everyone. However, besides the musical structure of this album, the vocal qualities of Patricia Petibon are to be noticed. Her versatility, brightness and radiance, her dynamism are the qualities which define her voice and which guide her towards those repertory choices that can bring forward her vocal qualities.
