Encanto del Mar – is the title of the most recent album released by tenor Placido Domingo, which was published in October, to the delight of the admirers of this giant of the lyric stage.

He does not approach the world of opera arias in this recording, which was published by the Sony recording company – his remarks regarding this topic are well-known and do not need any more comments. This recording carries us on a beautiful journey around the Mediterranean region, through some of the most known traditional Mediterranean songs, which were selected from a huge repertoire. A few acknowledged authors, along with songs from France, Corsica, Spain, Italy and Greece, snuck in this album – the famous Aranjuez, by Joaquín Rodrigo Vidre and the Plaisir d'amour, by Jean-Paul-Égide Martini, are all songs from the classic music sphere, which crosses the barrier of musical genres through their popularity.

What message does Placido Domingo transmit through this album – detached from the rigours of grand opera, of the idea of portraying a certain character? The simple pleasure of discovering a musical piece, which  is perhaps barely known  by the opera-loving public, of listening both to his 114 tenor roles  and baritone ones he has interpreted , which are being sung in a relaxed and romantic manner.

The songs are not very sophisticated, or pretentious for such a well-trained voice, but they convey the local charm, as the title of the album says – Songs of the Sea, accompanied by the guitar, cello, bass, percussion, accordion and saxophone, when the score requires them. A  strengthening episode offered by the tenor who has sung emblematic roles over time, on the stages of the greatest opera houses in the world – from Othello, Lohengrin, Parsifal, Don Carlo, Chevalier des Grieux and Faust to Samson.
