Mozart of the year 2014

The last three symphonies by Mozart - a topic that is overstrained in concerts, profile comments, album recordings and broadcasts. We are wondering, what else would be left to say in this domain after important conductors, such as, Karl Böhm, Sir Neville Marriner, Herbert von Karajan, Leonard Bernstein, Sir Charles Mackerras and Trevor Pinnock, played these musical pieces with original instruments in a wide variety of luxurious (discographic) interpretations.

The answer comes from the conductor Nikolaus Harnoncourt, along with his latest Mozart albumlaunched on 21st July, 2014, with the Sony emblem: The Last Symphonies: Mozart’s Instrumental Oratorium. The Austrian conductor has recorded his second version of these compositions , the first one being released with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe (COE) in the 90`s. Now, he is conducting the ensemble that has an important connection with his name Concentus Musicus of Vienna.

But which is the latest news?

Nikolaus Harnoncourt is tuning his orchestra of old instruments differently, because in this way, he is exploring what is special, the hidden meaning of the notes as they appear in the original manuscript. He is decoding Mozart’s thoughts, because the three symphonies (about an hour and a half in length), composed in less than six weeks, appeared from the pure pleasure to write, from the interior need to express himself on the symphony territory – they were not the result of a command; more than that, until the end of his life, Mozart did not return to this genre; therefore, his statements are conclusive.

The Austrian conductor supports another idea

They are three symphonies regarded as a unique work. The first part of Symphony No. 39, is the Prelude to this Instrumental Oratorio, while the forth part of Symphony No. 41 is the final one; so that Symphony No. 39 does not have a proper end, Symphony No. 41 does not have a proper beginning and so on and so forth. And even more than that, there are certain themes and motifs interconnected among them that can be listened to during all the three Symphonies, including a psychological tragedy that reaches the climax in the amazing final of the Jupiter Symphony. Obviously, you can enjoy these kinds of subtleties, only if you buy the album.

What does Nikolaus Harnoncourt declare?

'Now, I am deeply assured of this unity. Mozart must have had a plan; the instrumental oratorio does not exist as a configuration; but a genius as his could not be wrong when he created such an important work when writing his symphonies.
