Here, I am suggesting to you an album in the preview of its international release, scheduled for 30th September, 2014 - a Mozart album signed by the most famous pianist nowadays - the Chinese musician Lang Lang. It is actually a double album - because it includes both Mozart's Concertos for Piano and Orchestra nos. 24 and 17 - recorded in the studio along with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Nikolaus Harnoncourt and the Piano Sonatas nos. 5, 4 and 8 - recorded live during a Lang Lang concert at the Royal Albert Hall in London.
The album is also part of the Radio Romania Music Vote the best classical album of 2014 campaign, undergone by our site, which I warmly suggest you to visit in order to rate the albums registered in the contest.
One first album suggested by Lang Lang:
...a reason enough to value it as the most interesting because, as the artist himself says in an interview given in September 2014, Mozart is one of the composers whose music is the most difficult to play, reason for which he waited so long until he considered himself experienced enough to play Mozart.
Yes, I do think Lang Lang has done well by waiting till 32 years old in order to record his first Mozart album - not to forget mentioning that the Chinese pianist has been in the international concert circuit since 1999 when he was just 17. I am saying this because, maybe, for those who listen to Lang Lang, a true superstar of today's classical music, the Mozartian repertoire would seem inappropriate - and that the impetuosity of Romantic music would emphasize much better his exceptional performing qualities.
Nikolaus Harnoncourt - the Mozartian conductor
In the same interview, Lang Lang said how much he owed to Nikolaus Harnoncourt for that particular recording. 'It is a dream come true'stresses Lang Lang; 'it was an honour to record it, guided by a legendary conductor, renowned for being a master of Mozartian music.'
I for myself have felt Harnoncourt's baton taming Lang Lang's fiery spirit in the recently listened tracks. I have also admired the marvellous moments of the soloist instrument, but also how Lang Lang succeeds in going from reverie to impetuosity and the other way round.
Questions...
Listening to this album but enjoying the performance of Japanese pianist Mitsuko Uchida more than Lang Lang's for Mozart's piano works, one question came to my mind: is it possible that Mozart might have liked Lang Lang more? What does Mozart's music rather talk about: introspection or expansion? Is it rather philosophical or more playful? Or is it a mix of all these and each of us perceives the truth depending on his/her temperament, age, emotional and cultural make-up?
The Mozart album signed by pianist Lang Lang can be listened on Radio Romania Music on Monday, 29th September, 19:00 and repeats are scheduled on Sunday, 5th October, at 13:05 within the Music Box show.
