On 17th November, 2014, the Italian pianist Maurizio Pollini will release an album which contains five sonatas written by Ludwig van Beethoven; it marks the end of a long journey made by Pollini in his attempt to record on a disk all of Beethoven's sonatas - a journey which began forty years ago, with the three sonatas op. 31 and the two sonatas op. 49. Just a week ago, Deutsche Grammophon released an eight-disc box set, all containing Beethoven's sonatas performed by Maurizio Pollini.
Pollini - a piano wizard
Few modern musicians enjoy the respect that Maurizio Pollini acquired throughout his long career which stretches on more than forty years. At first, people talked about the resemblance between him and Arturo Bendetti Michelangeli, who was actually his teacher and who taught him how to play 'colder and more mannered' - as it is shown by a few American critics. In 2007, Pollini received a Grammy award, an extra recognition for a pianist who impressed the public and critics of big stages on three continents.
Maurizio Pollini will be, in January 2015, seventy-three years old and it is incredible how well he performs at this age. This record fully proves the confidence and musical understanding of an artist who has witnessed many things during his life, as a human being and as an artist.
Maurizio Pollini's new album which contains Beethoven's sonatas can be listened to on Monday, 17th November, beginning at 19:00; the repeats are scheduled on Sunday, 23rd November, starting at 13:05. It is also included in the Vote for the Best Classical Album of 2014 campaign.
