Sonatas with Itzhak Perlman and Emanuel Ax - Music Box, 19th October
Two legendary musicians and a chamber repertoire album: a feast that begins with Violin Sonata No.1, Op.13 by Gabriel Fauré. Itzhak Perlman is unable to walk normally because he had poliomyelitis, which is why he has to use crutches or a wheel chair; he plays only the violin sitting on a chair. This did not stop him from having such a flourishing international career, which started when he was only thirteen years old, and reached its climax at the end of the 1980's. He was well-known for the richness of his repertoire, the beauty of his sound and his wide vibrato. These qualities can also be found on this new sonata album. Of course, a 70-year-old violonist can no longer have the perfection of a 30-year-old one, but the way he understands music and his obvious professionalism counterbalance this aspect.
I have to mention that Itzhak Perlman is in good shape despite the fact that he is 70 years old: all the international music commentators remarked the refinement of Perlman`s interpretation on this album, in a repertoire that is difficult to perform, especially if we consider the philosophy that lies behind the music. It is a rare opportunity for us to listen to Sonata for Violin and Piano by Richard Strauss, a wonderful score with romantic nuances that Perlman performed many times, but which has never been recorded until 2015. Let us not forget the fact that Emanuel Ax`s contribution was extremely valuable, because he is an excellent duo partner when performing chamber music; he has a warm touch and a remarkable experience. He also won many Grammy Awards as a chamber music duo partner of the cellist Yo Yo Ma.
