Tribute to conductor Sergiu Celibidache at Radio România Muzical
This year's month of November will bring the memory of the famous conductor Sergiu Celibidache to the Romanian cultural landscape through the release of the film "The Yellow Tie", which can be watched in theatres from November 14th, as well as the launch of the book "Spațiul Celibidache" (The Celibidache Space) by Stejărel Olaru, scheduled to be published on November 16th at the Romanian Athenaeum.
To welcome all those who have seen or will see the film made by director Serge Ioan Celebidachi, Sergiu Celibidache's son, or will read the interesting and well-documented book by Stejărel Olaru, Radio România Muzical brings the power of the audio records by broadcasting all of the recorded concerts held by Sergiu Celibidache in Romania, scheduled for release on Thursdays and Fridays at 3:30 P.M., from November 13th onwards. These are unique records preserved within the archives of Radio România, and they carry a special, emotional charge.
Sergiu Celibidache left Romania in 1938, at the age of 26 to study in Berlin. He did not get another opportunity to return to Romania until 1970 (32 years later) when he visited Romania while accompanied by the Swedish Radio Orchestra, for which he had been the main conductor since 1965. Five concerts with three different musical programmes took place at the Radio Hall in June 1970.
Sergiu Celibidache also conducted the George Enescu Philharmonic Orchestra at the Romanian Athenaeum in January and May 1978, as well as in January 1979. These three concert programmes are still fondly remembered by all those who attended them, meaning both the concerts themselves and the rehearsals with an audience present alike, during which the Romanian Athenaeum Hall was filled to its maximum capacity. An encore from the January 1978 concert, namely the iconic recording of George Enescu's Romanian Rhapsody Op. 11 No. 1 has been preserved ever since.
Sergiu Celibidache returned to Romania once again right after the 1989 Revolution while accompanied by the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra. He was one of the first to come over and show his support for the Romanian people while being followed by trucks that were carrying aid. There were four more concerts with two different programmes which got held by him between February 14th and through the 17th in 1990.
All of the eight recordings of the concerts with unique programmes held by Sergiu Celibidache in Romania between 1970 and 1990 will be delightfully presented by Radio România Muzical. The series will get to be commented on by Ana Voinescu, and the producer is Larisa Scumpu-Baciu. All of the shows will be available on the Radio România Muzical website to be listened to and they will be broadcasted again starting from December 20th, 6:30 P.M.
