Interview with vocalist Luiza Zan

Monday, 7 April 2025 , ora 11.12

Vocalist Luiza Zan will be performing together with the Radio Chamber Orchestra on Wednesday, April 9th, at 7:00 PM.

A special event is coming next Wednesday at Sala Radio. Luiza Zan will perform songs from her album In My Village together with the Radio Chamber Orchestra, in arrangements by Andrei Petrache. Luiza Zan is now on the phone with us. Welcome, Luiza.

Thank you, it's great to talk again.

We're approaching a highly anticipated event for you. I understand the first rehearsals have already taken place. How does your music sound in this format arranged by Andrei Petrache?

It sounds very emotional. I don't know how it will sound to the general public, but for me it's a different kind of feeling, hearing my ideas played in this way. I should add something about the repertoire. The songs aren't only from the In My Village album - there are others as well - and I can tell you now that you'll hear, for the first time, my new piece in this format. Although the original idea started back in 2008, this will be its first public performance, especially since the concert will also be broadcast on the radio.

I already know that this year you've had several concerts with Amphitrio and Răzvan Florescu, so you're already familiar with the Wednesday night jazz core group. How is your relationship with them working?

I've known the guys for a long time. I haven't really worked with Andrei before, although I've really wanted to sing with him. I admire him tremendously, not just as a pianist, but also as an orchestrator and conductor. I'm very curious to see how the orchestra responds under his direction. He's a very attentive pianist - he listens more than he plays, which I think is extraordinary for a jazz musician. I've been working with Philip Goron since before In My Village. He's extremely energetic and very determined, not just as a musician but as a person. He's the youngest of us and the most driven. Răzvan Florescu is my favorite vibraphonist. He's a musician with a beautifully imaginative musical mind. I haven't worked with Mike Alex before, but we've known each other for a long time, from a Bucharest Jazz Festival where I was on the jury evaluating him.

What can you reveal about this symphonic project? Will there be a continuation after the Sala Radio event?

The large orchestral creative effort Andrei Petrache put into this would be a shame to limit to just one concert as its final form, so yes, there will definitely be more concerts. I won't say more about it just yet, but yes, there will be continuity.
