Interview with Laura Benedek, bassist of the band 7th Sense

The band 7th Sense is releasing their EP Live At Control today. It is the group's second release since forming in 2019. For more details about 7th Sense and their latest creation, we have bassist Laura Benedek, founding member of the band, on the phone. Welcome, Laura.

Thank you, happy to be here.

Let's first talk about this EP and the concert it's based on. What made you want to capture it? What happened that night?

In June 2022, we released our first album, Light in Chaos. That fall, in November to be exact, we decided to also hold an album release concert. We really wanted to have all the guest musicians from the album join us on stage, and that was the only time we could all align our schedules. Because it was our first album launch in the form of a concert, I really wanted to both record and film it. Now, almost two and a half years later, we felt it was the right time to release it. We chose five or six songs from the concert for the EP, which we've now put on all streaming and social media platforms.

Regarding your band - you're three core members, but for that concert, and from what I've seen on other occasions as well, you expand with a full brass section, percussionists, and Adi Stoenescu on electric piano and organ.

Yes. The three core members are: Sergiu Bivol on trumpet, Lucas Contreras on guitar, and me on bass guitar. Depending on the event or what kind of concert we're doing, we try to see if we can bring in some guest musicians. We really enjoy how our songs sound in a larger setup. For the Live At Control concert, we invited two musicians from England because we're heavily inspired by the jazz scene there. We had Joe Bristow on trombone and Richie Sweet on percussion. On drums, we had Anthony Gutierrez from Venezuela.

How would you define yourselves, broadly speaking? From what I hear, aside from the British jazz influence, there's a bit of BadBadNotGood in there too - the sound is very contemporary, very current.

As I mentioned, our main influence is the British scene. Beyond that, we're quite open - each of us listens to different kinds of music. Of course, we have a strong Latin influence as well, especially with Lucas being from Colombia. We also really enjoy afrobeat.

One last question. Since this is a live EP, do you have any upcoming concerts?

As of now, there are no concerts scheduled. Nothing has been announced yet, but we recorded our second album at the beginning of the year, which we're currently working on. It will feature guest musicians from various parts of the world. We're planning to release it by the end of the year.
