Interview with vocal soloist Teodora Brody

Monday, 27 May 2024 , ora 11.44

"Unifying Worlds: Classical Meets Jazz" is the title of a new performance by singer Teodora Brody-Enache. The event will take place in Bucharest, at Sala Luceafărul, on the evening of Sunday May 26th, starting at 19:30. Details about the concert can be found in an interview with Teodora Brody-Enache, conducted by our colleague Viorel Grecu.

Teodora, please introduce us to the world or worlds of your new show!

It's a concept that defines my artistic personality very much now, that is, through the sound I have and have acquired, I unite worlds. Specifically, musical worlds - jazz music with the music of our Romanian roots, with classical music. But also, seen worlds, unseen worlds, the world of the soul with the material world... it's like a reconciliation of me with the world, this show.

Will it, I understand, also be a tribute to a great musician?

I started this Unifying Worlds a few years ago, when I was invited to the George Enescu Festival and performed - many people know, but not enough people - vocal versions of Enescu rhapsodies. And today, Unifying Worlds comes with the next step; it's a tribute to the artistic personality who was and remains Pablo Casals. And, of course, from the show, from the repertoire we have a lot of surprises, a lot of novelties, we have a Mozart moment, Bach, of course Bela Bartok. So Unifying Worlds goes on drilling and bringing out new vocal versions of classical hits, of classical opuses that are well known and loved by the audience.

Who will be joining you on stage on Sunday night?

My long-time partners: Călin Grigoriu - guitar, who wrote the orchestrations for the quartet, Andrei Chivu - cello and our guest, Brazilian percussionist - Joca Perpignan. Joca Perpignan has been at the Bucharest Jazz Festival before and he really won over the audience and I always like to bring him along when it's time to bring worlds together, because he comes with that "flavor", that Brazilian language, those rhythms that are charming.

Let's just say that Sunday's show is, in fact, the start of a tour that will stretch across the ocean.

Yes. But there, in particular, we will bring versions of Enescu rhapsodies, because the American public and the Romanians overseas want very much to bring these vocal versions and to hear Enescu rhapsodies vocally.

You will also be performing at the Kennedy Center, from what I've seen.

Yes, one of the concerts will be in the famous Kennedy Center.

Until then, will there be other concerts in cities around the country?

There will be some in the fall. We're leaving the surprise to have it then, we're going to take this concert to the country as well, but in a different format. We'll say in due course.

Until then, let's rehearse when you and your bandmates can be seen in Bucharest and where?

On May 26th, Sunday, at Sala Luceafărul, at 7.30pm. We are waiting for you! It's a new musical journey in which the audience has a big role - it's an exchange of energies on stage with the fantastic audience...

This is a defining feature of your concerts, this permanent connection with the audience.

Yes, I think this is somehow the dream of every musician, every artist. Because every artist, in his own way, wants to give. That is, in fact, art!
