Interview with Ciprian Țuțu, conductor of the Radio Academic Choir

Monday, 27 May 2024 , ora 10.57

Radio Hall from Bucharest hosts on Thursday, May 23rd, 2024, a new concertregistered inthe International New Music Week. The choir conductor, CiprianȚuțu, tells us about the musical program prepared bythe Radio Academic Choirfor this occasion, andin addition about the guestsoloists, in an interview given to our colleague, Sarah Natsis:

Mr. Ciprian Țuțu, the Radio Academic Choir prepared and conducted by you will perform on Thursday in a concert that is part of the International New Music Week, the 33rd edition. First of all, how do you assess the importance of such a festival for Romanian cultural life?

It is particularly important to promote not only local, but also current music. Many times, during the concert seasons we may come across titles from the history of music, somehow...a diachronic look or maybe, even if it sounds a little pejorative,out-of-date we could often be cataloged, because we do not play the music of our times. Therefore, such a movement for tradition that the International New Music Week, this top festival that Romanian music holds this helm, is absolutely welcome. We are happy to be a part of this festival in every edition.

I would even anticipate perhaps a question of yours by saying that it is a first as far as we are concerned, in that our evolution this time is not in tandem with the National Orchestra or the Chamber Orchestra, so we are not approaching a symphonic-vocal, but it is a program presented exclusively bythe Radio Academic Choir.

You will present to the public a very diverse musical program, including even works that the public will have the opportunity to hear in absolute first audition. Tell us about the repertoire choices made for the event atRadio Hall.

It is a program that I thought together with the master Dan Dediu, comprising a number of 8 pieces - 8 authors. As you well noted, there are pieces as well in absolute first audition, such as the cantata for soloists, choir and electroacoustic environment entitled "The 6 seals" belonging to the composer Maia Ciobanu. Moreover, in the absolute first audition is a work that my dear master, Dan Buciu, offered me and offered it to us, in fact, some years ago, and which I only now manage to put in the act, let's interpret it.It is about "Our Father" written for a cappella choir and with various soloist roles. But there are also other works - the master Cornel Țăranu from Cluj, from whose creation we will sing the work "About time",such as Mrs. Felicia Donceanu, from whose creation we will sing the work "Morning", or such as Mrs. Cornelia Tăutu, from whose creation we will resume a highly acclaimed and extraordinary work in terms of energy and writing, "Folk Entertainment".Another very interesting work, very dynamic, glamorousI would say, is the one belonging to the composer Mihai Măniceanu, entitled "What are you thinking".And last but not least, I would present the other two remaining titles: "O, magnum mysterium", a work belonging to the composer Dan Dediu and, because we are still around the children's holiday, June 1st, I chose the work "Sabaracalina" for the choir mixed and musical toys. So, a colorful, diverse program that we hope will cover all the tastes and preferences of the public, in any case specially niched for this festival.

Who will be the soloists who will perform together with the radio ensemble?

As usual, we selected the evening soloists from among the members of the Radio Academic Choir: Olga MurariuCaia - soprano, Claudia Caia - alto, Nicolae Simonov - tenor, Cristian Ruja - baritone, Cristian Paraschiv and Mina Stavără - tenors, Bogdan Popa and ȘtefanVoicu - baritone, respectively bass. At the same time, I also mention the presence of the pianist Carmen Săndulescu and the collaboration with our colleague from the National Orchestra, AlexandruAnastasiu, for the piece by Mrs. Cornelia Tăutu (Alexandru playing his part on vibraphone and tom-tom).
