Interview with conductor and clarinettist Petru Pane

Thursday, 5 December 2024 , ora 11.19

You are the conductor of the concert "Sinfonietta", taking place tomorrow, November 30th, 2024, at the National University of Music in Bucharest. The program consists of works from French literature, including the title piece - Sinfonietta by Francis Poulenc. How did you choose the program?

I thought, first of all, that it is an extremely interesting and beautiful repertoire, which is rarely performed in Romania. I've never seen it programmed; I'm sure it's been performed before, but very rarely. It is music worth listening to.

Two 20th century pieces. What stylistic particularities would you say each of them has?

I won't go into too much theoretical detail. They are both works that are inspired by the classical period, in fact; they are two neo-classical works. And if you come to the concert, you will find many stylistic similarities with the classical period, with Haydn, Mozart...

"Sinfonietta" - a concert dedicated to Romania's National Day, a concert in the AdMusicam series organized by the Romanian Cultural Institute, a program dedicated to supporting and educating young musicians. The ensemble you conduct is therefore composed of gifted young Romanian performers. How would you describe your relationship with this ensemble?

I feel really honored to be able to work with them. We are all friends, we all get along very well. There's an enthusiasm that's hard to find in mature orchestras. Everybody's pulling as hard as they can and it's a wonderful atmosphere.

You have also participated in many projects and programs dedicated to young musicians. How significant do you think they are?

They are essential for preparing future musicians. It gives them a platform to demonstrate their skills and gain experience. It is essential to have such programs.

You are a clarinetist and a conductor. How do these two roles work for you?

They feed each other at the moment. I would say that I aspire to be a musician - that's the most important thing - and clarinet and conducting are two paths I have chosen. But most importantly, I am a musician.
