American Musical Evening at the Romanian Atheneum

Friday, 3 September 2010 , ora 13.58

On September 1st, 2010, ANGELY`S, a Blower Symphony Orchestra conducted by Cristian Marius Firca, gave a concert at one of the weekly Musical Evenings, held at the Romanian Atheneum, Bucharest. Angely's was formed in June 2009; the ensemble is a member of the Dacian Knights Foundation and is the first private blower orchestra in our country.

The selected programme was dedicated especially to American music, including pieces by John Philip Sousa, Leonard Bernstein, Richard Rogers, John Williams and Ted Ricketts, adapted for an orchestra consisting of a blower and percussion instrument ensemble.

Entertainment, film or jazz music were colourful through their diverse interpretations which lacked neither the parodical aspect in pieces like South Rampart Street Parade and The Typewriter nor grotesque in the Candide Overture by Leonard Bernstein.

A special moment was offered by the young violin player, Simina Croitoru who completed the programme with a hint of sensitivity and expressiveness by playing the famous theme of the soundtrack of the film Schindler's List composed by John Williams.

The blower orchestra gave a successful two-hour concert although they have not yet become an homogeneous ensemble from the point of view of the instrumental groups. What is missing is a varied dynamics and the involvement of the instrumentalists and the conductor's in the discovering and rendering of a message through their playing.

The two encores played at the end won the audience's enthusiasm due to their popularity: the second waltz from Jazz Suite No. 2, by Shostakovich and In the mood arranged for Glen Miller's already classical big band.
