Gewandhaus Orchestra, conductor Andris Nelsons – Symphony No.7 by Bruckner: Music box, on 4th of June 2018

Monday, 11 June 2018 , ora 10.59

We listen to Wagner and Bruckner, in the performance of the Gewandhaus Orchestra in Leipzig, conducted by Andris Nelson - on a CD released in Germany on 6th of April and internationally on 20th of April 2018 under the auspices of Deutshe Grammophon. There are recordings from a live concert that you could listen to also at the Radio Romania Music on 11th of March 2018, the concert with which the Gewandhaus Orchestra celebrated 275 years of existance, and also the official inauguration of the collaboration with Andris Nelsons as cappelmaister.

To celebrate the anniversary of the Gewandhaus Orchestra, Andris Nelson has proposed to the Deutsche Grammophon an integral part of the Bruckner symphonies; this year there have already been released two discs form this series, with the Symphony No.4 that I presented also at the Romania Radio Music on 12th of March and then the Symphony No.7 from the CD presented in this article. Last year appeared also the Symphony No. 3 from the same series. Bruckner
's symphonies are published alongside Wagner's works - firstly, because Wagner was together with Bruckner among the great German composers of the second half of the nineteenth century and secondly because both of them were professionally linked to Leipzig and the Gewandhaus Orchestra and finally because Andris Nelson has a particular affinity for Wagner's music.

Together with the Symphony No.7 by Bruckner, on the CD released on 20th of April there is the Siegfried's death and the Funeral march from the opera Twilight of the Gods by Richard Wagner: a shattering version.

On 11th of March 2018, the Gewandhaus Orchestra held a concert of special significance, celebrating 275 years of existance - a glorious history, marked by the 21 cappelmeisters that led it - the most recent one being the Latvian Andris Nelson, who at 39 years is one of the most sought conductors of our times. In fact, Andris Nelson has already two recent Grammy awards with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the second great orchestra he conducts. As a cappelmeister of the Gewandhaus Orchestra, Andris Nelson entered the gallery of great names that conducted this venerable ensemble, including Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, Arthur Nikisch, Wilhelm Furtwangler, Bruno Walter and more recently, Kurt Masur, Herbert Blomstedt and Riccardo Chailly.

It was natural for the Gewandhaus Orchestra to include in the anniversary concert program the Symphony No.7 by Bruckner - in 1884 this symphony was performed for the first time by the Gewandhaus Orchestra, and then repeated many times. It is a monumental, core-like score that Andris Nelsons manages to make extremely relevant for the nowadays listeners. It is an interpretation captured in a live concert and we are amazed by the extraordinary quality of the orchestra, the magnificence of the interpretive vision, the colors that the conductor manages to create together with his orchestra. A relevant and very moving recording: the Symphony No.7 by Bruckner with the Gewandhaus Orchestra from Leipzig, conducted by Andris Nelson.

The album can be listened at the Radio Romania Music on Monday, 4th of June, from 19.00 pm and rerun on Sunday, 10th of June from 13.05 pm.
