Pianist Orrin Evans is the kind of contemporary musician with a deep understanding of the close connection between collegiality and the creative process, of the artistic essence that transcends technique and pride. This quality helped him create a remarkable catalog of personal collaborations and projects. We have known him since 2017 with the trio The Bad Plus, but the ideal environment in which he manifests his musical expression is called Captain Black Big Band, an ensemble that includes between nine and 17 instrumentalists and takes over the flexibility of the post-bop group in a setting sophisticated and elegant orchestra. The fourth album under this name, "The intengible between", reproduces exactly the atmosphere desired by Orrin Evans, in which the precisely designed plan, based on originality and musical rigor, is made in a framework marked by a close human connection. The musicians not only sing together, but share time and table throughout the recordings, and this is felt throughout the album which records another premiere: it is entirely orchestrated by Evans. Here is the main reason for the satisfaction of listening to this modern jazz super-album. Captain Black and Orrin Evans take us through beautiful places by virtue of the jazz tradition, with free and fit musicians, evolving into a full understanding of the idea of community.
