Tom Smith: album 'Gecko' - Jazzy Hour, January 26th, 2021

Friday, 5 March 2021 , ora 14.44

The young English saxophonist Tom Smith (not to be confused with the American trombonist of the same name or the Scottish saxophonist Tommy Smith) debuts record in an unique trio formula with piano and vibraphone, with the album "Gecko". This is also the name of the group of three friends, former colleagues in the jazz section of the Royal Academy of Music. Tom Smith, Johnny Mansfield and Will Barry have developed their own sound signature that balances the intimacy of reflection with rhythmic dynamics and instrumental exuberance, redefining the idea of chamber jazz, which for many means only intellectual introspection"Gecko" is an emotional album, formed on the collective intuition of open minds, with a clearly expressed repertoire, with bold improvisations that complete balanced, spacious arrangements, conveying safety and good mood. The energy of the three shows us the spirit of new jazz, but also the starting point of this genre, which involves not only the assimilation of a language, but also its personalization. Tom Smith has done this very well and takes us with his trio through places to remember.
