Enrico Pieranunzi - "Blues & Bach-The Music of John Lewis"

Monday, 23 October 2023 , ora 11.27

If we want to find an example where an ensemble with symphonic components elegantly modifies jazz without making it arid, then we go straight to John Lewis, founder of the famous Modern Jazz Quartet, who, metaphorically or even literally, wanted to achieve a synthesis between blues and Bach. He succeeded repeatedly, forming a trend taken up by others such as pianist Enrico Pieranunzi and arranger Michele Corcella who recreated the aesthetic harmony between jazz and classical with an album dedicated to Lewis. Pieranunzi with Luca Bulgarelli on double bass and Mauro Beggio on drums and Corcella conducting the Orchestra Filarmonia Italiana. Pieranunzi is well-trained in the classical school, while Corcella has orchestrated for jazz musicians before. "Blues & Bach-The Music of John Lewis" brings new resonance to familiar compositions and challenges our imagination. John Lewis would have enjoyed listening to this album, but how would Bach have worked with the blues range? The orchestrations are totally in favour of the original compositions and the trio keeps the music within creative jazz. Following MJQ's 1974 release 'Blues on Bach', we have this fascinating concept album that brings us closer to this beautiful blend. John Lewis's blues crossed with Bach's fugues.
