Triple Premiere: principal conductorGabriel Bebeșelea and artist in residence Daniel Ciobanu are inaugurating the new piano of the “George Enescu” Philharmonic, through a live exceptional concert
On Thursday, January 21st 2021, at 19.00 oclock, the symphonic orchestra of the George Enescu Philharmonic will perform a live exceptional concert, without an audience, which marks a triple premiere: Gabriel Bebeelea is conducting the orchestra for the first time as the principal conductor of the George Enescu Philharmonic, pianist Daniel Ciobanu is debuting as the first artist in residence of the Philharmonic, a position he has been in since the 2020-2021 season, and, on this special occasion, the new Steinway piano of the institution will be inaugurated. The programme consists of The Piano Concerto No. 23 in A major (K. 488) for piano and orchestra by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and TheSymphony No. 49 in F minor (H. I/49), La Passioneby Joseph Haydn.
This concert is an event! There are many reasons which convince me that this is the correct evaluation. Our principal conductor, Gabriel Bebeelea, is a remarkable intellectual-musician, and the talented pianist Daniel Ciobanu is our first soloist in residence, a premiere status for the Bucharest Philharmonic. And a very rare premiere: after 26 years there comes a significant donation, the new Steinway piano, which will be inaugurated on the 21st of January. I want to highlight the sophisticated nobility of the donation from a family of aristocratic discretion (who wished to remain anonymous, Ed.), of immense generosity and devoted to the authentic, edifying culture. I want to express the entire appreciation, gratitude, and affection, not only of the musicians and soloists of today and tomorrow, but also of the music lovers who will benefit from the royal gesture of the donor family, praised Andrei Dimitriu, general director of the George Enescu Philharmonic.
I had a special connection with this orchestra, we always enjoy a kind of alchemical relationship, which was, of course, very much supported by the energy underneath the dome of the Athenaeum. Im certain that we will accomplish very beautiful things together, as long as we manage to get through this period when the safety of the musicians and of the public is the most important thing, stated conductor Gabriel Bebeelea.
The Romanian Athenaeum holds this colossal aura which profoundly absorbs you from the first steps you take on the marble floor of the foyer. My first collaboration with the Orchestra from the George Enescu Philharmonic was very specially, and it took place in 2018, during the celebration of the Centenary of the Great Union. Im thrilled to have become the first artist in residence of this Philharmonic. The musicians make music of the highest level. Im delighted that they have an elegant and noble artistic attitude, alongside an environment which is open and receptive to new ideas, pointed out pianist Daniel Ciobanu. Gabriel Bebeelea is principal conductor at the George Enescu Philharmonic since the 2020/21 season, as well as Musical Director and Principal Conductor of the Macedonian Philharmonic Orchestra. Apart from these, Bebeelea continues his activity and Principal Conductor of the Transylvania State Philharmonic in ClujNapoca, a title he has had since 2016. Apart from these positions, Gabriel Bebeelea is a guest of orchestras such as Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin, Konzerthausorchester Berlin, Barcelona Symphony Orchestra (OBC), OrchestrePhilharmonique de Marseille, Orchestre National de Lille, Singapore Symphony Orchestra, State Academic Symphony Orchestra of Russia EvgenySvetlanov", The National Philharmonic Orchestra of Russia. Some of the soloists who collaborate with Gabriel Bebeelea are Sarah Chang, Ray Chan, AugustinHadelich, ValentinaLisitsa, Leticia Moreno, Dimitri Ashkenazy, Alexandra Dariescu, Daniel Ciobanu, AlexandruTomescu.Gabriel Bebeelea has recorded alongside Rundfunk-Sinfonierorchester Berlin a CD with Pastorale Fantaisie pour petite orchestre and the Strigoii oratorio by George Enescu, which constituted a world premiere. The CD was launched with the record label Capriccio in September of 2018. That was also when the music sheets of these pieces were published at the Musical Publishing House of the George Enescu National Museum, Gabriel Bebeelea having been the one who transcribed and edited the manuscript of the piece Pastroale Fantaise pour petite orchestre, as well as holding the trusteeship of these pieces by Enescu. In 2017 he founded the old and new music ensemble MusicaRicercata. He was awared Best Conductor during the Romanian National Opera Awards in 2014. He has a BA at the Gheorghe Dima Musical Academy in Cluj-Napoca, having graduated in the class of masterPetreSbrcea, and an MA with master HoriaAndreescu at the National University of Music Bucharest, and in 2018 he got his summa cum laude PhD at the National University of Music Bucharest, coordinated by Prof. Univ. Dr. Dan Dediu. Gabriel Bebeelea lives in Vienna, where he graduated postgraduate studies at The University of Music and Performing Arts, in Prof. Mark Stringers class.
Pianist Daniel Ciobanuis the first artist in residence of the George Enescu Philharmonic, starting with the 2020-2021 season. He was born in 1991 in Piatra-Neam and he started studying piano under the meticulous mentorship of CosmaMagdolna. When he was nine years old he took piano lessons with Delia Blan in Bacu. Then he took lessons from MihaelaSpiridon, who mentored him until he finished high school. During this period, he got numerous awards at school Olympiads and contests around the country. He won many grants, studied in Scotland with Graeme McNaught and then with Aaron Shorr and PetrasGeniusas, and he gratued from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. He completed his studies at coleNormale de Musique Alfred Cortot in Paris, studying with Marian Rybicki, and at Universitt der Knste in Berlin, where his professors were Pascal Devoyon and Markus Groh. He won the most important international recognition in 2017 at the Arthur Rubinstein Contest in Tel Aviv, where he won both the Second Prize Silver Medal, and the Audience Prize. He then performed at Carnegie Hall, Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, Gewandhaus Leipzig, Konzerthaus Berlin, St John's Smith Square London, the George Enescu International Festival Bucharest and he played concerts in Japan, China, Taiwan, South Africa and Brazil. Ciobanus musical personality and distinctive technique have led him to important collaborations with orchestras such as: Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, Elb-Philharmonie Hamburg, Israel Philharmonic and Israel Camerata, Royal Scottish National Orchestra, George Enescu Philharmonic and the National Radio Orchestra.In 2017 Daniel Ciobanu founded the Neam Music Festival, in order to create an international platform for young artists. In the 2019-2020 season he evolved many times under the baton of conductor Omer Meir Wellber, one time having his debut with the Gewandhaus Orchestra in Leipzig. His debut CD, containing pieces by Prokofiev, Enescu, Debussy and Liszt, was launched in 2020 and has enjoyed specialized critical praise, earning the Les Chocs du mois distinction for December 2020 of the French magazine Classica.
