Meeting Marius Brenciu...
Saturday, 26 February 2011 , 19.00

Marius Brenciu is yet again our guest on ‘An Evening at the Opera’:

Ten or fifteen years ago, he was one of the most ‘competitive’ Romanian lyrical artists, having won the ‘Julián Gayarre’ Singing Competition and the ‘George Enescu’ International Competition– canto section – in the 1990s, both the second prize and the special prize in the 2000 ‘Queen Elisabeth’ International Competition in Brussels, the first prize of the Young Concert Artists in New York in 2001; he is the only artist to have received both prizes in the 2001 Cardiff Singer of the World Competition– the Lieder Prize and the Grand Prize ‘Singer of the World’;
Today, he is a tenor who, irrespective of the competition world, continues to reassert his stature on well-known lyrical stages – from the Opera House in Brussels to the famous Metropolitan Opera House in New York.

Tenor Marius Brenciu makes a comeback this Saturday on a broadcast of his performance of Vincent d’Indy’s opera L' Étranger recorded on July 26th 2010 and featured in the Festival de Radio France et Montpellier:

L' Etranger is an opera composed at the beginning of the 20th century, on a subject similar to that of Richard Wagner’s Der fliegende Holländer. Because it is rarely performed, this is the perfect opportunity for you to tune in;
- L'Étranger features conductor Lawrence Foster, baritone Ludovic Tézier and soprano Cassandre Berthon.

Marius Brenciu comes back on ‘An Evening at the Opera’ not only as a performer but also as an interviewee:

In an exclusive interview, we talked about the difficult task of not becoming overwhelmed by international competitions and, moreover, the pressure put on one’s shoulders when it comes to reasserting one’s top level after having won such competitions; about how he manages to focus before a première, about the Belgian years, his friends and, last but not least, about his performance on the stage of the Opera House in Bucharest, on the occasion of the ‘George Enescu’ International Festival and Competition jubilee.
