An evening at the Opera
Opening Season 2010-2011 live broadcasts Season from MET
Saturday, 18 December 2010
, 19.00
This December An Evening at the Opera could not but put on the holiday clothes and go out in the street with its drummers to announce the New Live Broadcasts Season which celebrates once again the international lyrical performance: because, following the season opening with Richard Wagner’s Valkyrie at Teatro alla Scala in Milan on December 7th 2010 and the Don Giovanni premiere at the Staatsoper in Vienna, Saturday, December 18th, is the first live broadcast performance at the Metropolitan Theatre Season in New York - as well as a new production for another Don in music history, namely Don Carlo by Giuseppe Verdi.
· ‘You’ve heard about total theatre? This is it.’ (Variety)
· ‘A music so glorious not one minute seems superfluous’ (Bloomberg)
· ‘A clear-cut hit… rarely have I seen an opera audience so unanimously satisfied’. (New York Post)
· ‘Nicolas Hytner’s production earned an enthusiastic ovation. Marina Poplavskaya, With her luminous singing, beautiful pianissimo high notes and unforced power, [Marina Poplavskaya] was a noble, elegant Elisabeth, Yonghoon Lee, an extremely expressive Carlo, while the young conductor Yannick Nezet-Seguin brought youthful passion and precocious insight to his work.’ (New York Times)
These are a few reviews following the premiere performance on November 22nd 2010; appraisals to which you may also add the sound experience you have recently experienced when – not by chance – we broadcast the performance Don Carlo recorded last Season at the Royal Opera Covent Garden in London – with the same cast: Marina Poplavskaya, Simon Keenlyside and Ferruccio Furlanetto (but Jonas Kaufmann in title role and Semyon Bychkov’s baton) – thus MET offers a London performance held by a fresh tenor Yonghoon Lee and an equally fresh conductor Nezet-Seguin who have had a major triumph last year with Carmen.
So we are to listen again to an EXTRAORDINARY performance on Saturday, December 18th, starting at 19.30, LIVE from the MET.
