Radio Concert Season
The first season concert by The National Radio Orchestra
Friday, 8 October 2010
, 19.00
The Radio Romania 2010-211 season, preceded by an organ festival (with recitals, presentations of historical instruments and a vocal-symphonic concert), will officially begin on the 8th of October with the first The National Radio Orchestra concert.
The playlist may draw some attention by the unique selection of works. Clocks III by Doina Rotaru (a very appreciated composer from the last ‘Warsaw Autumn’ Festival, both for the piece she played there and for her charismatic dialogues with other composers) is going to be a premiere. So, in the beginning of our programme, we’ll be hearing a Romanian composition, that has been, fortunately, insisting on showing up.
Andante spianato and Grande polonaise brillante, Op. 22, along with the Variations on Là ci darem la mano, Op. 2by Frédéric Chopin will be played by pianist Luiza Borac who has been building an impressive career these last few years in Europe and beyond. We must mention here her CDs with the works of Enescu, Schumann, Liszt, Kreisler/Rachmaninoff, Tárrega and... Chopin!
Part two will consist of Symphony No. 5 in E minor composed by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky in 1888. After the second performance of this piece, the composer said: ‘...I now think it is a failure...’ And when they first played it in the States, the critics’ hostility combined the cliché of the images with the shallow knowledge of the true Tchaikovsky style and credo. On October 24, 1982, the Boston Evening Transcript wrote: ‘Of the Fifth Tchaikovsky Symphony one hardly knows what to say... In the Finale we have all the untamed fury of the Cossack, whetting itself for deeds of atrocity, against all the sterility of the Russian steppes. The furious peroration sounds like nothing so much as a horde of demons struggling in a torrent of brandy, the music growing drunker and drunker. Pandemonium, delirium tremens, raving, and above all, noise worse confounded’. A century later, time puts a condescending smile on our face when we look at such reviews.
Our live broadcast, starting at 19:00 on Radio Romania Music, brings you the opening act for the concert conducted by Maestro Horia Andreescu, the first season concert by The National Radio Orchestra.
