Extraordinary recital

The Radio Orchestras and Choirs invite you on April 30th 2010 at 19:00 to an extraordinary recital held at the ‘Mihail Jora’ Studio by two remarkable musicians: Valentin Gheorghiu, the great pianist, and pianist Roxana Gheorghiu, his wife.

The programme invites you on a journey through music history: Sonata for Two Pianos in D major by Mozart; Andante and variations for two pianos in B flat major by Schumann; Waltzes (5) for two pianos by Brahms; Slavonic Dances No. 3 for two pianos by Dvoűák; Dolly Suite for piano four-hands by Fauré.

Illustrious pianist and composer, Valentin Gheorghiu is renowned worldwide and is part of the category of great contemporary musicians. Important awards, concerts and recitals on prestigious stages and participation in international festivals are merely a few elements of this great artist’s career. In the concerts he has held he has collaborated with celebrated conductors such as Rafael Kubelík, Sir John Pritchard, Kurt Masur, Seiji Ozawa, Antal Doráti, Georges Prêtre, Constantin Silvestri, Kirill Kondrashin, Sergiu Comissiona, Cristian Mandeal, Horia Andreescu. An inspired partner in chamber music, he has held many concerts in memorable formulas, also having made important recordings alongside the most esteemed Romanian interpreters such as Lola Bobescu, Silvia Marcovici, Cătălin Ilea, Aurelian Octav Popa, Mihaela Martin, Sherban Lupu. Each and every one of his performances is a musical event which enchants the audience by its nobleness, elegance and refinement.

Pianist Roxana Gheorgiu is currently a university lecturer with a Ph.D. in musicology at the National University of Music in Bucharest. With a rich chamber and concert repertoire, consisting in many creations of composers such as J. S. Bach, D. Scarlatti, J. Haydn, W. A. Mozart, L.van Beethoven, F. Chopin, F. Liszt, R. Schumann, F. Mendelssohn Bartholdy, G. Enescu, P. Constantinescu, Roxana Gheorghiu has been asked to hold concerts and recitals, solo or in various groups on the stages of every Philharmonic in the country, as well as in Hungary, Slovakia, Spain, Greece, Italy, Poland, Luxembourg and the old USSR. She and Valentin Gheorghiu have made a pianistic duo which became famous for the quality of the numerous concerts and recitals held both in Romania and abroad.
