Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune not only inspired a new paraphrase for the programme title, but it is also a new work by a contemporary composer. Here is what Rajko Maksimoviæ says: ’At the Festival in Belgrade in 1993, the Serbian flutist Ljubiča Jovanoviæ played all six sonatas for flute by Johann Sebastian Bach. I was so excited when listening to it that I decided to compose something for him. And because my country is in a terrible situation – civil war, inflation – I had to withdraw in a sphere of pure beauty, untinged with any drama. Debussy’s work, my favourite among his opuses, was an excellent refuge. Moreover, it is also a work for orchestra, where flute is granted an important role.’

This is how the Serbian composer Rajko Maksimoviæ started writing Prélude à l'avant-midi d'un faune for flute and strings. You can listen to other details of the interview during the break at the live broadcast of the concert where the Radio Chamber Orchestra shall interpret together with soloist Constanța Cazacu.

The programme will continue with another contemporary work, Viola Concerto by Thomas Schmidt-Kowalski, with soloist Emilian Dascăl and ends with Suite for orchestra No.1 in C major by Johann Sebastian Bach.

Everything under the baton of Cristian Brâncuși in the 'Mihail Jora' Studio and live on Radio Romania Music on Wednesday, February 9th from 19.00.
