Russell Ferrante Trio: album 'Inflexion' - Jazzy Hour, February 23rd, 2021

Pianist, composer and arranger Russell Ferrante has marked his illustrious presence on the jazz scene for over 40 years. His collaborations with Joni Mitchell, Lee Ritenour, Al Jarreau and Bobby McFerrin have remained in the basic catalog of American music, but the name to which he is most closely related is Yellowjackets, a group he founded in 1977 with Robben Ford and Jimmy. Haslip.

In 2020 he is the only original member of the group and makes his record debut under his own name, as a trio leader. And after so many chosen directions, certainly the inexhaustible musician, it is no wonder that "Inflexion" is a mature album, complex and full of nuances, exposed without haste, generously, in the classical formula in which the piano is based on a flexible rhyming section and well connected. A perfect environment to approach your own feelings intimately.Ferrante didn't feel the need for a fiery demonstration of fast-paced jazz, exposed to the breath of competition, nor do I think he ever wanted that. Instead, he preferred to share with his group colleagues an oment of elegance and depth in the same language of jazz. Continuity is the right word to describe the moment captured on this album.

Based on the rhythm provided by bassist Michael Valerio and drummer Steve Schaeffer, Russell Ferrante takes the necessary space to give the keyboards the exact size of emotions, to project their personality much appreciated by the public in a different but equally emblematic setting.
