Joe Lovano, Marilyn Crispell and Carmen Castaldi: 'Garden Of Expression' - Jazzy Hour, March 2nd, 2021

Here is a unique trio formula through which saxophonist Joe Lovano, pianist Marilyn Crispell and drummer Carmen Castaldi create an environment of whispered intimacy, lyricism and suspense. "Garden of Expression" is the second album to appear in this formula, as a step forward, a transition to another level, a deepening of the trio relationship.

Lovano, a musician whose spectrum extends beyond the history of modern jazz, sings with exceptional sensitivity and the music he writes for this group, melodic and harmonically open, rhythmically free and with spiritual involvement, encourages the subtle responses of the partners. The sense of space is perfect between Lovano and Castaldi, developing an improvisational relationship that the two have shared since the '70s. The album is also a suitable context for Marilyn Crispell to expose her nuanced solos and counter melodies that convey a chamber character to the group. The musical details are superbly done and the production is at the highest level of sound and mixing.
