The standard trio is a frequently encountered formula in jazz, even when it's composed of great musicians. However, only a few of them exceed the podium phase of adulation, of a mirror with virtuosity, or of a marketing recipe. Creativity, the creative interplay, the warmth of the sounds, released in space, these are still a remarkable rarity we could never get bored of. February 2021 brings us such an album recorded by the pianist Bill Cunliffe, together with the bassist John Patitucci and the drummer Vinnie Colaiuta. Again, my comment could end here. There isn't really much to say. Only that it is the first album recorded in this formula, and that we're listening to the kind of production that captures a magical moment, that of the encounter between musicians of the highest level, at the right moment. A flawless album, with a simple title, that we should always have at hand whenever we want exceptional jazz or as a perfect example for making other people admire this sublime musical genre.
