Dave Stryker - 'Baker's Circle' - Jazzy hour, April 27th, 2021
Dave Stryker is one of the guitar aces who since the '80s has maintained a level of style and production that deserves much more praise. Because I feel like he's underestimated. Very rarely have I listened to an instrumentalist so disciplined and who at the same time allows himself emotional freedom. The impeccable technique does not frame him in patterns, on the contrary, it helps him to relate at the highest level with the other instrumentalists and gives him the security through which he controls the musical act. We hear this most clearly on the album "Baker's Circle" released in 2021, a tribute to his mentor David Baker. A session completed by a well-polished writing, aesthetic solos framed by well-chosen musicians, both from the category of veterans and from that of future aces and an electrifying sound flow. Even if following the influences can lead to a critical cliché, it can help us understand the musician's relationship with tradition. Stryker retains something of what it was before, adding a consistent personal sound and a distinct compositional style. His jazz is direct, easily approachable and attractive in the way it stands out, although, after the sound, we would be tempted to put the Hammond organ in the foreground. Jaren Gold is phenomenal, his organ fills the entire repertoire, as well as the pedal bass. The saxophonist Walter Smith III is also distinguished, but the guitar keeps its position through tone and swing. We recognize many guitarists in the style of Stryker, but at the same time we enjoy a comforting jazz album, as it cannot be more authentic. A collective effort, admirably coordinated by Dave Stryker.
