Pat Metheny – ‘Road to the Sun’ soundtrack album-Jazzy hour, the 20th of April 2021

After releasing in 2020 the exceptional album "From this Place", impeccably done in his distinctive style, Pat Metheny returns in 2021 with a striking change, although he has accustomed us throughout his discography with many surprises. "Road to the Sun" is also a guitar album, but we can say that it presents Pat Metheny's music, more than his guitar art. The album contains two pieces written by him performed by other guitarists, and the only song where he uses a 42-string guitar is composed by Arvo Part. Two difficult, dense suites, demanding even for advanced players on instruments, represent the premiere offered by Metheny on this album. The first, "Four paths of light", has been attributed to the great guitarist Jason Vieaux, whose impressive versatility fits perfectly with such a composition. He is a longtime performer of Metheny's music, being the author of the album "Images of Pat Metheny", released in 2005. As such, the author introduced very difficult fragments in the score from a technical point of view. The whole album is challenging for both performers and listeners. But the beauty discovered beyond this complex construction deserves a more insistent audition. The longest part of the disc is the "Road to the Sun" suite, which is attributed to another group of super-guitarists, the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet, with a wider repertoire than that of Jason Vieux. The use of these virtuosos allowed the score to challenge through polyphonic structures and variety of styles. It is clear that through this recording, Metheny looks for new ways of expression and has largely succeeded. His unique and brilliant way of transforming sophisticated craftsmanship into auditory delight remains evocative and his music breaks new grounds.
