Matt Carmichael – 'Where will the river flow' album - Jazzy hour, June 1st, 2021

Scottish saxophonist Matt Carmichael makes his perfect debut in 2021, with the album "Where will the river flow", a balanced musical corpus, made up with modern aesthetic sense. It is a fascinating musical beauty offered with the confidence of the the master for whom age is just a number.

At the age of 21, Matt Carmichael wrote all the songs on the album and recorded it in the quartet with Fergus McCreadie on piano, Ali Watson on double bass and Tom Potter on drums, musicians of the same generation already highly appreciated on the European stage. In addition to the melodic beauty extracted from the Celtic specifics, we are surprised by the musical level at which these young musicians present themselves, from which intuition and natural aptitude are clearly distinguished. The school had a contribution in terms of discipline and arrangement/setting, but the relationship between them is of a joyful naturalness.

The solid group sound and collective energy turn the themes of each song into true examples of music class. Matt Carmichael created his own sound, lyrical, emotional, clear and believable/credible, drawing Scottish landscapes with jazz instrument and language. Scotland is celebrated throughout the fluent repertoire, so "Where will the river flow" becomes a firm statement, a strong and beautiful album, especially in terms of debut.
