Julian Lage: 'Squint' - Jazzy Hour, September 17th , 2021
In the first part of our meeting we listen to the amazing guitarist Julian Lage again, the subject of an eight-year-old documentary, "Jules at Eight" and an expanding phenomenon, without showing any creative limit. The exuberance which I was of since I was a teenager is maintained on every album, instead the musical level, which manages to offer through the most popular instrument of today, the electric guitar, the gift of improvisation and harmonic depth, all its developed qualities amaze me further. Many miracle children show their limits when they exceed the moment of maximum attention, while some of them like Julian Lage continue to offer consistent productions. At the age of 33, the American guitarist marks another peak in his career with the album "Squint", with songs that he uses as a medium to evoke both the classical style and a modern, personal approach. Along with bassist Jorge Roeder and drummer Dave King, Lage linked this repertoire during his residency at Village Vanguard, influenced by great instrumentalists who combine the popular theme with sophisticated improvisation. The trio reunited in Nashville, where they recorded this exceptional album, with more depth, mystery and search.
