Will Bernard: album "Ancient grains", Jazzy Hour, September 17th , 2021
In gastronomic language, old grains describe seeds or cereal that have not changed for hundreds of years but are used in new recipes. Guitarist Will Bernard uses this term as a metaphor on his album "Ancient grains". The basic concept refers to the instruments used on this production, such as guitar, organ, amplifiers or drums, which are classics, each according to design or year of manufacture, but used by musicians to create new musical recipes. Even the group formula is a classic organ trio, with Sam Yahel on Hammond and Donald Edwards on drums, which reflects Will Bernard's intention to use his combined experience to create a modern version of traditional sounds and styles. "Ancient Grains" offers us a healthy combination of funk, swing and soul, live and virtuoso, plus the opportunity to easily observe how modern musicians, educated in tradition, can use what they have learned to enter new territories. The new sounds do not mean giving up the classic ones, just as the new recipes are based on the same old ingredients.
