Omer Klein: the 'Personal Belongings' album - Jazzy Hour, December 7th 2021
We stick to the borderless music of some fascinating young artists who have organically assimilated the cultures they went through and the various sources of inspiration, continuing to extend the language of classical jazz towards the future. The prolific pianist and songwriter Omer Klein has written at least 100 compositions, but as if he has never been more intimate, he hasn't addressed himself more personally than on the album "Personal Belongings", released in 2021. Klein gives us an informed impression of the contemporary world from the position of a member of a closed circle of great pianists on a record that completely defines him, as a man, artist, father and teacher. Written during the period when most musicians had to radically change their program, the songs observe the world through his own feelings, in the form of a miniature painting, executed with an amazing sense of space.
The virtuosity exhibited by elaborate arrangements describes a permanent balance between loneliness and the need to find the self, regulated by the strict need for direct communication. There are six tracks that show a closer connection between artist and instrument than ever before and four compositions for the trio, where Omer Klein is joined by his older partners, the bassist Haggai Cohen-Milo and the drummer Amir Bresler. The resulting tension creates emotional contrasts between contemplative moments and group energy, and the whole is dominated by the role of freedom and the connections between people, countries and customs, between Brahms, Brazil, jazz and the Middle East. Maturely approached themes, with real emotions, being comforting at the same time in the noblest sense of the word.
