Mathias Eick–the album "When We leave" - Jazzy hour, December 14th, 2021

In 2018, the Norwegian trumpeter Mathias Eick successfully released the album "Ravensburg", one of the most comprehensive and beautiful exhibitions of the improvisation platform born from Nordic folklore and taken over by modern European jazz. As a continuation of this beautiful album, rather a maintenance of such an original state, "When We Leave" appeared, in the same instrumental formula, on the same theme of family and friends, with more emphasis on emotions than portraits, evoked by complex relationships and unforeseen events that changed the lives of all of us.

Although it gives the impression of space, more due to the lyricism and the timbre warmth, Eick's music is complex, with several layers subtly arranged to support the beautiful melodic themes. The lyricism of the compositions is sophisticated, only in some places more meditative, not to say melancholy, each instrumentalist offering the most delicate hypostasis of the instrument's expression, including the rhythm distributed on two drum sets. It feels like a solid group sound, formed in a few years, ready to leave memorable songs and continue exploring. "When We Leave" captures all our senses from one end to the other.
