Cleveland Symphonic Orchestra, conductor Franz Welser Möst - CD Review, June 7th, 2023
Richard Strauss - Suite from the opera "The Knight of the Roses"
This year, conductor Franz Welser Möst has already conducted the 21st season of the Cleveland Orchestra, one of the world's finest symphony orchestras, founded 105 years ago. In his more than two decades as the music director of the famous North American orchestra, Franz WelserMöst has significantly enriched its repertoire, toured, presented new artistic and educational projects, concert operas and major recordings that have won numerous international awards. With an extended contract through 2027, the Austrian musician will become the longest tenured conductor in the history of the renowned orchestra, which the New York Times calls "America's most brilliant orchestra," admiring its virtuosity, elegance of sound, variety of color, and the cohesion of the ensemble under Franz WelserMöst. You can convince yourself of these qualities of the Cleveland Orchestra by listening to its recent recording on the disc released on the 2nd of June, 2023. The album, also included in Radio România Muzical's Discs of 2023 project, features two live recordings made in the spring of 2022 at the Orchestra's Concert Hall - three pieces from Alban Berg's Lyric Suite and Richard Strauss's Suite from the opera The Knight of Roses. Franz Welser Möst has chosen sound material from the three acts of the opera for this three-part suite, highlighting the romantic spirit of the score created by Richard Strauss between 1909 and 1911, which premiered in Dresden. The extraordinary dynamism, the climaxes, the exhilarating dialogues between the string and the wind parts, the natural interweaving of the swirling and lyrical moments lend charm and colour to this discographic release.
