"Fudalarot Duo" (Wojciech Fudala - cello, Micha³ Rot - piano) –record "Transfiguration" - CD Review, June 13, 2023

Rebecca Clarke - "The Cloths of Heaven"; Karol Szymanowski - Sonata op. 9 in D minor; Ernest Bloch - "Nigun" from the "Baal Shem" Suite".

On February 17th, 2023, the record Transfiguration was released, which includes 20th-century chamber creations, recorded by two young and talented Polish musicians - cellist Wojciech Fudala and pianist Micha³ Rot - songs originally composed for violin and piano or accompanied voice, transcribed for duo of cello and piano.

"The history of music is a history of transformations, reinterpretations," said composer Luciano Berio, while another Italian musician,Ferrucio Busoni spoke of "every notation is, by itself, a transcription of an abstract idea". The concept of the two Polish performers who chose for the record the arrangements of some songs by Karol Szymanowski, Ernest Bloch and Rebecca Clarkeis based on these quotes taken from the presentation text of the Transfiguration record.

One of the most important works on the record is Sonata op. 9 in D minor composed by Karol Szymanowski in 1904 for violin and piano, transcribed for cello and piano by Kazimierz Wilkomirski, an excellent Polish composer, conductor and cellist of the last century. In 1982, when he published his version of the score, Wilkomirski wrote: "A truly romantic creation, this sonata, with its pathos, with heroism and lyricism; a music full of poetry and strong emotional tensions, in correspondence with the nature of the cello, perhaps even more than violin's one". Indeed, the rich and expressive stamp of the cello eloquently expresses these characteristics, the nostalgic spirit and the drama of the Op. 9 by Karol Szymanowski, reflected by their passionate interpretation of cellist Wojciech Fudala and pianist Michal Rot.

Wojciech Fudala and Micha³ Rot have been performing in the Duo Fudalarot since 2016. The two artists intensely promote the Polish repertoire, especially the music of Miczyslaw Weinberg, and in 2019 they released their debut record, dedicated to this composer. They have won numerous international awards and have a rich concert activity, especially in Poland, but also in other countries; in addition, they are professors at the Academy of Music in Lodz - Michal Rot teaches chamber music and has received a scholarship from the Polish Ministry of Culture for outstanding achievements in the field of music, and Wojciech Fudala is the head of the cello department at the mentioned institution and soloist of the Wroclaw Philharmonic. Therefore, the two musicians have an impressive artistic activity and a great collaboration, and their most recent record project is proof of this.
