Bill Frisell - "Four" - released on the 11th of November 2022
Bill Frisellis an authentic grandmaster, bringing his uniqueness as a natural gift, naturally and exquisitely manifesting virtuosity, style and novelty, discovering treasures in a field that might be seen as totally explored. And it's impossible to confuse his style. Two years after 'Valentine', he releases the record 'Four', a poignant meditation encompassing loss, renewal and the mysterious values of friendship. The material is also appealing because it features several reinterpreted tracks alongside new compositions, bringing together incredible musicians with shared personalities and ideas - namely Jonathan Blake on drums, Gerald Clayton on piano and Greg Tardy on saxophone and clarinet. The group contributes their own voices while revealing Frisell's guitar and the structure of his compositions. Everyone's expression comes across as equal parts melodic and timbral, establishing the depth of the music from the start with clear choices. Counterpoint shifts the nuances, but each remains tied to the original idea, an essential aspect in any artistic context, from my point of view. The music floats, even in moments of emotional pressure. Bill Frisell remains inspired, wonderful, making us believe again that anything can be played effortlessly.
