Dhafer Youssef - "Street of Minarets"
East and West have always been sensitively contrasting in culture and art, and music has always been separated by two different modes of articulation, which has made convergenceexercises to be risky. But there are some extraordinary artists who have found the right proportions to tastefully blend the two different aesthetics. One of them is Dhafer Youssef, whose voice, oud and composition have put him at the top of a contemporary music current that unites East and West through music. He has found the connectionpoints and freed the traditional instrument from its strict role and brought it into the language of jazz. His recrods have their own identity, with a special atmosphere in which the expression of the voice reaches an incredible intensity, in complete harmony with the warmth of the stringed instrument, framed by sublime jazz instrumentalists linked by interplay. So is "Street of Minarets", released in 2023. A wonderful musical gift in which love, the struggle, the dream and the obscure find their perfect illustration, and besides the unique sound, punctuated by inspired improvisation and oriental air, there is another rhythmic direction compared to previous records. For this, Dhafer Youssef chose his musicians before writing the music, giving each instrumentalist the right, personalized score. And the musicians are fabulous. Herbie Hancock (piano), Marcus Miller (bass), Nguyen Lee (guitar), Rakesh Chaurasia (flute), Adriano Dos Santos Tenori (percussion), Dave Holland (double bass), Vinnie Colaiuta (drums), and Ambrose Akinmusire (trumpet). "Street of Minarets" is a major musical event that reflects the contemporary musical ideal, where strong styles, cultures and personalities have found their place to coexist in harmony.
