Brad Mehldau - album "Your Mother Should Know Brad-Mehldau Plays The Beatles" - Jazzy hour, April 4th, 2023

Brad Mehldau is a virtuoso who perfectly doses technique into the vocabulary he uses while curiously extracting every musical meaning, including philosophical ones. That's why his music is as strangely alluring as all timeless works of art. This is where Beatles music kicks in, especially during the psychedelic metamorphosis of the mid1960s, when pop music was infiltrated with unfamiliar harmonies and surprising rhythms, as we find on albums like "Rubber Soul" and "Revolver".Few productions are loaded with so many good, cleverly designed pieces. As a student, Mehldau studied classical piano and listened to progressive rock and bands like the Beach Boys and the Zombies. He also greatly admired David Bowie. The Beatles later appeared in his collection and studies. In the early 1990s, he began performing their music, eventually recording a concert in 2020 at the Philharmonie de Paris Concert Halland releasing it in 2023.His music has always been influenced by the artists he listened to as a teenager, and you can feel that regardless of the complexity of the composition. On this album, "Your Mother Should Know-Brad Mehldau Plays the Beatles", each track is treated as a jazz standard, the harmony is reconstructed and the melody is the starting point for lyrical and ingenious improvisation. The most enjoyable aspect about this pianistic homage is that we can recognize each piece while admiring an eminent musician in the midst of a liberating exercise.
