Alex Sipiagin - 'Mel's Vision' album - Jazzy Hour, March 18th, 2023
I wanted news from trumpeter Alex Sipiagin, who, in his more than 30 years of American experience, has earned a reputation as a technically limitless improviser with exceptional tonal control, mastering rhythmic and harmonic complexity with precision, passion and lyricism. His sophisticated, and at the same time fluent, and pleasant compositions can be heard on more than ten albums, rich in counterpoint and surprising melodic turns in the most pleasant sense. Through these pieces, Sipiagin manages to project the expressive register of the trumpet for other instruments. In 2023, he releases "Mel's Vision" with other first-rate instrumentalists, saxophonist Chris Potter, pianist David Kikoski, bassist Matt Brewer and drummer Jonathan Blake. This fantastic quintet manifests itself on a repertoire less frequented in the jazz canon, showing Alex Sipiagin's intention to interpret the music of other authors. Only two original songs, the rest compositions by McCoy Tyner, Charles Mingus or Chris Potter. The song that gives the title of the album is dedicated to his wife, with whom he went through favorable changes, especially since they moved to Italy, implicitly reflected in new musical beginnings. The pieces are given a fresh identity, unity as a whole and musical openness through the exceptional improvisations. "Mel's Vision" is a genuine group album.
