In 1973, Ralph Towner released his first solo guitar album, "Diary," on which he also added the piano, having gone through classical piano school. Moreover, he only delved into the guitar at the age of 22. After 50 years, he recorded "At First Light" using only the classical guitar, which he had favored for some time. No overlays, just the guitar, on a set based on his own compositions, bearing the traces of the composers who had attracted him over the years. George Gershwin, John Coltrane, John Dowland, or Bill Evans. We don't find direct quotes from their music, but only nuances that shaped his style. The sound is spacious, resonant, captivating through interpretation. In general, we don't know how long we could listen to an acoustic guitar, but in Ralph Towner's case, time is no longer relevant; it's only the flow created by the six strings, the mediation, the serene atmosphere created in a hall in Lugano. Sometimes it's hard to believe that we're listening to just one person and a guitar. Perhaps it's because the space is filled with that intangible element that always triggers our emotions. Or maybe it's because that's how a great musician expresses themselves.
