Lars Danielsson & Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra – album "Lars Danielsson Symphonized" - Jazzy hour, 16th of May 2023
Lars Danielssonis not only one of Europe's finest double bassists, but also a fascinating composer, who uses a complex language for bright and refined music. As a bassist and cellist he is equally at home in the rigorously organised classical idiom as he is in the virtuosic and spontaneous jazz idiom. After all the wonderful albums, recorded with dozens of musicians in various formulas, in 2023 comes the sublime work that brings together all the experience, all the elements. "Symphonized" is a fantastic performance in which Danielsson's pieces are recorded in the studio with Gregory Privat on piano, John Paricelli on guitar, Magnus Ostrom on drums and, the big plus, the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra. A double album that in the first part deals with familiar, expressive, singable, beautifully orchestrated themes, balanced between the two poles, classical and jazz, and in the second part tackles a work written by Danielsson especially for horn player Bjorn Bohlin. The melodic variety is perfectly framed in the ensemble, in fact absolutely all the elements are strictly gathered in favour of the musical piece. The orchestra doesn't have to play jazz, while Lars Danielsson frames his improvised lines elegantly into the organic, well-calibrated ensemble. That's why I think "Symphoniezed" is one of the best symphonic-jazz achievements, while the musicians are aesthetically challenged, we listen to the most beautiful music.
