WDR Big Band – the album ”Ariabesques”, - Jazzy hour, 17th of October 2023
We listen to Bach in many versions, ones more inspired, others dominated by aesthetic limitations or cynicism. Johann Sebastian has always been with us, which is why performing his repertoire in an updated manner seems normal. The Goldberg Variations resemble a music lesson, and at the same time, give us the definition of the genius through sublime listening. It is an essential work, and as a result it is frequently played to us in various manners, from harpsichord to big band. Undoubtedly, through jazz you can bring any composition to life, by possessing style and aesthetic sense. That is what happens on "Ariabesques", an album that the composer, pianist and professor Bill Dobbins, accompanied by WDR Big Band from Koln, ingeniously approaches the work originally written for harpsichord, conferring it an impressive syncopated counterpoint arrangement, replacing some repetitive notes with short pauses. Bach's musicality is still present through some aspects, otherwise we enjoy a new experience whereby original songs and bass lines are intertwined with spectacular solos. Is it a surprise? Perhaps, but a totally accessible and welcomed one. Dobbins is well acquainted with the two musical worlds and finds common ground between them while managing to preserve their great qualities. As well known and beautiful as Bach's music is, this special unreleased 2023 album is as earnest and thorough.
