Enrico Pieranunzi, Bert Joris & Frankfurt Radio Bigband – the album “Chet Remembered” – Jazzy Hour, October 17th 2023
We meet again with one of Italy's best pianists, Enrico Pieranunzi, on his second album recorded accompanied by an orchestra. We've listened to him before at Jazzy Hour with the album "Blues and Bach", a tribute to John Lewis, in collaboration with the Italian Philharmonic Orchestra. In 2023 we listen to his album "Chet Remembered", produced with the Big Band Radio from Frankfurt, conducted by trumpeter Bert Joris. Pieranunzi pays tribute on this record to Chet Baker, from whom he learned the economy of notes and emphasis on melody and with whom he performed frequently between 1979 and 1988, the year of Baker's death. That is why the repertoire composed by Pieranunzi and orchestrated by Joriseste consists of musical scores that Baker sang during that period, with clear traces of style, rendered in a personal manner. Each melodic base opens up surprising rhythmic-melodic developments and the arrangements are fantastic. Chet Baker was one of the purest talents in jazz history, and this album carries his spirit with reverence.
