Pat Methenydelightsus periodically, he's been doing it for nearly 50 years and he meticulously prepares his surprises so that no lover of cleverly arranged music is left waiting too long. In 2023 he gives us "Dream Box", a set of nine solo tracks for electric guitar, selectedfrom an open file on his laptop. Metheny very often records ideas, takes, standard pieces, in one go and saves them for an eventual definite project. During a 120-day tour in 2022 he had plenty of time to research and assemble a few relevant moments into an organic whole. The method that unites the original material is taken from his first album: an initial harmonic scheme, framed by a melodic offering and improvisational sequences. Personal tone predominates, including on baritone guitar, as we find the same emotion and poignancy in the less euphoric than usual performance. The sophisticated nature of his music is revealed as a clear statement, through a unique musical vision andimpressive technique.
