George Enescu’s masterpieces, performed by cellist Andrei Ioniță, violinist Ioana Cristina Goicea and pianist Daria Tudor – Music Box, 2nd of October 2023
I am truly thrilled to present the latest addition to Radio România Muzical's collection, released under the prestigious label of Casa Radio - a captivating ensemble of works by George Enescu, performed by a remarkable trio of young Romanian musicians: cellist Andrei Ioniță, violinist Ioana Cristina Goicea, and pianist Daria Tudor. All three, artists whose brilliance we recently enjoyed during the Enescu Festival, engaged with audiences through autograph sessions for this new album, a project theyworked on at the end of 2022. The inaugural encounter with the public took place on the 4th of September, at the Sala Palatului in Bucharest, during Andrei Ioniță's concert accompanied by the Tonhalle-Orchester from Zürich.
This album encompasses Enescu's Sonatas No. 2 for cello, violin, and piano, along with the complete Suite No. 2 for piano. Due to practical considerations, the recording features only two parts of the latter piece.
For me, this is an emotionally charged journey into the world of George Enescu, but also for those who carry on his legacy today.
Following their initial success with a Beethoven album, Andrei, Ioana, and Daria decided to move on to Enescu's compositions - the very pieces they performed during the extraordinary chamber concert under the patronage of Radio România Muzical on the 30th of November2022, in Brussels, and later on the 18th of December2022, at Sala Radio.
This endeavour, supported by the Constanceand Andrei Rhoe Foundation, has now materialized into an internationally relevant album.
The Cello Sonata Op. 26 No. 2 stands as a mature work from George Enescu, composed in 1935 - and Andrei Ioniță seems to perfectly embody the essence of this mature Enescu, who communicates through a language that speaks not only of universality but also of his Romanian identity. If we ask ourselves today who we truly are as Romanians in a global and European context, Enescu's music, especiallythe way this Sonata concludes with the distinct à la roumaine finale, provides an answer. Here, Andrei Ioniță and Daria Tudor strike the right tone and maturity of expression.
The Second Sonata for violin and piano represents the youthful Enescu, an 18-year-old studying at the Paris Conservatory, whogathered in this sonata the experience of his relationship with the French world.Listening to Ioana Cristina Goicea and Daria Tudor interpreting this Sonata, both in concert and on this album, is witnessing a great violinist breathing life into every measure of the score and transporting us to delicately outlined art nouveau worlds. I admire the perfectly suited tempos and the finesse of the musical phrases found in the two works. In this interpretation, we find a model for the 21stcentury.
The album concludes with two parts of Suite op. 10 for piano by George Enescu, interpreted by Daria Tudor. Although only two parts are featured on the album, Daria has recorded the entire suite. I have chosen to offer you this complete listening experience for one of Enescu's most renowned piano works, as envisioned by Daria Tudor, a young pianist with a vision full of energy and, simultaneously, the poetry of this composition.
I am delighted to have contributed to the release of this album, which not only explores who Enescu is for today's young musicians but also resonates with us as an audience. First of all, I am pleased that the choice of these three musicians leaned towards Enescu, an indispensable reference point. Second of all, the album embodies the perfect harmony of interpretation, encapsulating talent, maturity, and the experience of living far from home while remaining deeply connected to it. It stands as a success among the many achievements that define us as a country and a nation, helping us articulate our spirituality in a time when everything seems relative and lacking any landmarks.
