Cellist Pablo de Naverán - selections from the album dedicated to the suites of Johann Sebastian Bach - CD Review, 10th of January 2023
The complete recording of the six solo cello suites composed by Johann Sebastian Bach during his time as chapel maestro at Cothen is a real challenge for any virtuoso performer. These famous scores created between 1717 and 1723, which have become a landmark in cello literature, are distinguished by complex counterpoint layers, extreme technical difficulty, emotional depth and expressiveness.
The most recent recording of Bach suites is by the experienced Spanish cellist Pablo de Naverán, based in Switzerland. Born in Bilbao in 1975, he studied at the Paris Conservatory and then at the Yehudi Menuhin Academy of Music in Gstaad, where he is currently a professor. He studied with famous cellists such as Alberto Lysy, Mihai Besedovschi, Yehudi Menuhin and Radu Aldulescu, thus being close to Romanian culture. He also played in the George Enescu Festival in 2015. He has won numerous prizes in international competitions such as the Gaspar Cassado Competition and the College d'Espagne Prize in Paris. He has performed concerts and recitals on renowned stages in Europe, Japan and Argentina - Teatro Colon in Buenos Aires, Tonhalle in Zurich, Berlin Philharmonic and the Romanian Athenaeum in Bucharest are just some of the venues where he has been applauded. The international press has rightly noted the exceptional talent of this cellist and his ability to communicate with the public, his artistic maturity, his strength of expression adapted to the repertoire he tackles, ranging from Baroque to modern creations.
The album dedicated by Pablo de Naverán to the solo cello suites by Johann Sebastian Bach was recorded in September 2021 at the church in the Swiss town of Perroy and released on the 15th of December 2023 on Claves Records.
